Recent Results2007 GWEFC Foil 48'erEarly on it looked like entries for this year's Foil 48er were going to be very low; but a flurry of entries in the final week and several on the day combined to make it one of the largest fields ever. (Even with some no shows on the day.) Unfortunately some confusion over the laying of pistes meant we had a delay in starting - which meant that we had fewer rounds than in previous years. With exactly 40 fencers we ran pools of 7 and 6 fencers. With such large pools each round was taking well over an hour, our idea of running 5 or 4 rounds of pools fell by the wayside, so in the end we only had 3 rounds and no lunch break. Other than a lack of time, everything ran smoothly with no major problems. As in previous years, the staff at the ARC were very patient with us when it was time to leave. Due to this lateness and the good weather, we presented the medals on the steps outside the ARC. Full Results Page. Pictures to follow. 2006 GWEFC Foil 48'erEntries for this year's Foil 48er were slightly down, possibly due to a clash with a Scottish Fencing training weekend (and the final of the Rugby 6 Nations). However, we did have an even numbers of adults and juniors for the first time. Due to the ARC building having restricted opening times on Saturdays, we only got into the building around 10:30. So after a quick setup of pistes and with only 20 fencers we decided to run 5 pools of 4 in order to get quick turnaround for the first rounds. Three rounds of pools were completed before lunch. After lunch we ran the final two rounds as 4 pools of 5 - which we had calculated would give us enough time to clear up and present the medals before we got chucked out of the the ARC at 4:30. Everything was going very well until, now with 5 fencers in each pool things seemed to slow down. In addition, thanks to some creative use of their pool sheet one pool managed to confuse us all at the end of the fourth round - delaying the start of the final (ie medals) round. In the end we finished only a tad late - thanks to the staff at the ARC allowing us to remain inside to present the medals. We actually had 28 fencers - but 2 scratched. So we had 26 fencers with 6 pools of 5 or 4 fencers. This meant we could have a large number of rounds - 5 in total. Every thing seemed to be going well - no major equipment failure; power for the boxes; only one (or two) iffy battery boxes. Everything seemed to be going well. However things seemed to get a little strange after the third round, and more so after the forth round. There was some "unusual" placement of fencers within the pools. Rather than doing the allocation by hand (well, fingers and toes) we had chosen to use some software - unfortunately the code did not really understand about 48ers. So the allocations went a bit strange - we eventually figured out that we were only seeding on the last two rounds. Will improve for next year - or else go back to fingers and toes. That said everyone had a good day of fencing even if there were a few shouts of "But I can't be in that pool". Full Results Page. The photos will be uploaded soon (they really will - honest). Many thanks to Alex of goFence.com for the donation of a Maraging Foil blade for the prize for top overall fencer. 2004 GWEFC Foil Forty'erThe annual (?) Foil 40er was held at our current club venue - Cally Uni's ARC building. We started off with 30 fencers and 4 working boxes - there seemed to be some problem with the mains power in the gym. The first round took longer than expected - with pools of 8,8,7 and 7 fencers. We "lost" one fencer after the first round (well, okay, he had to leave early) and got the mains power working. So the second and final rounds were more managable numbers. However, having spent so much time on the first round, we were in danger of being thrown out of the gym before we finished. In the end, it all turned out fine - with the prizes being awarded outside on the steps next to the ARC. Full Results Page. The photos will be uploaded soon. (I lied - so sue me.)
