Elgin Duellist Fencing Club is delighted to hold its annual 6-weapon open competition on the 23rd/24th September. This event will be supported by Leon Paul Scotland. 

The competition will consist of two rounds of poules. The first poule will be seeded by British Ranking, the second from the results of the first and the Direct elimination will be seeded from the second round of poules only. In addition, there will be a mixed Secondary competition.

2024 Glasgow Open - Results

The 2024 Glasgow Open was held on the 6th & 7th of April. The new team of organisers delivered a great event for their second year running the competition. For the second year running, the event has increased the number of competitors; with over 160 fencers.

Glasgow Open 6th & 7th April

The annual Glasgow Open Fencing Competition will be held on the weekend of 6th/7th April at Hutchesons Grammar School.

Entry has now closed, but even if you are not competing, it will be a great opportunity to watch some fencing.

GWEFC will be running the cafe both days.

Congratulations to Sheila

Many congratulations to Sheila Anderson for becoming the British Veterans Fencing Women's Foil National Champion for the second year in a row. She is also the Cat 3 Champion for the second year.

The event was held at the Manchester Fencing Centre on Fri 22nd to Sun 24th March.

 

 

 

Glasgow Open 2024

The annual 6-weapon Open event will return over the weekend of 6th/7th April 2024.

This is an open competition open to all British Fencing members with a "Compete" license (13+ on 01/01/2023). This year's event will be a Ranking event.

 

Format

The competition format will be two rounds of poules followed by direct eliminations (with no cuts in any event). At the organisers' discretion, there will be mixed secondary events for those knocked out in the earlier rounds.

Stirling Sword 2023

The Team and Individual mixed-gender events will be held over the weekend of 21st/22nd January by the University of Stirling Fencing Club.

Team events will be poules of 3/4 teams followed by direct elimination. Individual events will be 2 rounds of poules followed by direct elimination. Packed lunches will be provided for each competitor each day.

As Stirling Sword is classed as a recreational event, fencers require at least a BF recreational licence in order to compete.

 

Commonwealth Veterans 2022 Results

Several of our regular fencers competed in London's recent Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2022. This was a two-week event combining competitions for the Junior, Cadet, Senior and Veteran age categories - with additional competitions for the Para-fencing categories.

There were some exceptional performances for Scotland within the Veteran Team events, including Gold medals for the Veteran Women's Epee, Silver for the Veteran Men's Foil, and Bronze for Veteran Women's Sabre

Beginners' Night

All specialist equipment will be supplied by the club - this will be worn over your own clothes.  Wear clothes you will be comfortable working out in - but no shorts due to safety concerns.  You need to bring some indoor sports shoes with non-marking soles.  The building has changing rooms and showers available.

Scottish Intermediates

Intermediary competition to bridge the gap between beginner competitions and senior opens to be held over the weekend of 28th/29th October.

Medals will be awarded to the finalists. The champion of each competition will win free entry to both the M8 Open and the Glasgow Open.

Glasgow Open 2017 - Results

As usual, it was a lovely sunny weekend for the Glasgow Open - ideal weather for staying indoors in a noisy fencing hall.

Several of our club members and irregular visitors competed in the event with the following results. Especially notable were Alex Wren taking Gold in Women's Epee and Constance Philippe taking Bronze in the Women's Foil (and winning Ladies Celtic Master-at-Arms).

BVF Championships 2017 - Results

Several of our club members and irregular attendees travelled to Manchester to compete in the British Veteran Fencing Championships 2017.  This was held at the splendid Manchester Fencing Centre hosted by the Marshal Fencing Club.

Stirling Sword 2017 - Results

As usual, the Stirling Sword competition was held at Stirling University - as usual, it was a well-attended affair with many fencers from far and wide.  It was great to see teams and individuals from numerous clubs, including fencers from ECE based in Paris.

Emergency Aid Training Course

GWEFC will be holding an Emergency First Aid training course on Sunday 26th March.  The venue is to be confirmed but probably Cally Uni.

This is an ideal course for coaches needing their first certificate or a renewal, but it is also useful for any athlete.  The training takes around 6 hours to complete but we will be having breaks throughout the day.

The trainer will the Ruth Thomson who is Scottish Fencing's approved First Aid Trainer.

Veterans 4 Nations Match

This year's Veterans 4 Nations match will be organised by the Irish Fencing federation.  It will be held in Daley (on the coast near Dublin) with all matches held on Saturday 6th May.

There will be a Gala Dinner in evening at the Royal St George Yacht Club.

A special hotel deal has been arranged with the Haddington in Dun Laoghaire. 

 

Veterans Winton Cup 2017

The University of Stirling Fencing Club will be hosting the 7th Stirling Sword competition on the weekend of 28th/29th January 2017.

On Saturday, there is a mixed gender team competition for each weapon.  Teams must consist of 3 people with optional reserves.  There will be one round of poules followed by direct elimination.

On Sunday, there is a mixed gender individual competition for each weapon.  The format will again be one round of poules followed by direct elimination.

Helen wins Bronze at CVFC2016

Our club president (and a founding member of the club) Helen Pitt travelled to New Zealand to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Champiognships.  She won a Bronze Medal in the Women's Foil event.

The 2016 Celtic Challenge was held in Dublin over the weekend of 23rd/24th July at DCU hosted by Ireland Fencing. Veteran fencers from various Celtic nations took part in competitions over both days with their individual results being accumulated to decide the overall result for the Dragon Trophy.

Manchester Sabre Open 2016

Marshal Fencing is holding a Sabre only Open held at their new Manchester Fencing Centre on Sunday 18th September.

The Centre has 19 full size metallic pistes, with 13 Scoring boxes for competitions, Changing Rooms, Strength and conditioning area,meeting/class room, parents chill area, with pool table and vending machines, a 30 meter bench for fencers with storage for fencing bags, and also an armory.

M8 Open 2016

This year's M8 Open will try a new format - a combination of Individual and Team events.  Things might not run as smoothly as previous years but you can be sure it will be great fun. We do need your help to make this work.

Both events will run simultaneously so teams will need a reserve - since some of your team may be fencing in their Individual event when you need them for the Team event.  The Team event will be Mixed but the Individual event will be single sex.

 

Highland Open 2016

The Highland Open 2016 will be held in Elgin on the weekend of 29th/30th October.  As usual this is a 6 weapon Open competition open to all fencers over 13.

Scottish Fencing have recently announced that the next Scottish Open will be held on the weekend of 15th/16th Oct.  Previously the Scottish Open was usually held on the first weekend in January.

Glasgow Master at Arms 2016 - Results

Even though this year's event was smaller that last year's, there was a great amount of fun at the Glasgow Master at Arms.  People even put up with some very strange electrics - we have now decided that the Linlithgow electricity supply was too slow ;)  Next year we will aim to be back in the metropolis that is Glasgow where power is plentiful.

Celtic Challenge 2016

Event Date: 
2016-07-23

The Celtic Challenge is a biennial event for veteran (over 40s) fencers, contesting all six weapons in an individual open tournament. There are competitions for both men and women, with one single age class: above 40 years of age.  This is an invidual competition but nations nominate 3 fencers to make up the scoring team for the overal team result.  There is no limit on the number of individual fencers for each nation.

The 2016 event will be hosted by Ireland and will take place on 23-24 July 2016 at Dublin City University.

Beginners' Night

Already failed in your New Year Resolution to attend the gym?  Try something different - Fencing is more fun that the gym and suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Glasgow Master at Arms 2015 - Results

The first Glasgow Master-at-Arms tournament was held at Caledonian University on Saturday 18th July.  In this event, all competitors must fence all 3 weapons in a single day.  This was a challenge for the fencers and the organisers.

The overall Master-at-Arms were Alexandre Arbelet (Salle Holyrood) and Marianna Lanza (University of St Andrews).

Salle Holyrood are holding a Foil and Epee team event on the weekend of 4th/5th October.

Celtic Challenge 2014 - Results

This year's Celtic Challenge held in South Queensferry was won by the Scottish Veterans' Team.

The Celtic Challenge is run as individual competition but the Regions nominate 3 of their fencers in each weapon whose results are used to calculate the overall Team Results.

Modern swords

The foil has a blade made of pure steel, the swords maximum length is 3 feet and is not allowed to weigh more than 1.1 pounds. The sabre is a sword from the 18th century and is similar to the foil but weighs slightly less and is about one inch shorter.

The Oldest Fencing Club

The world’s oldest fencing club is the Confrérie de Saint-Michel, which was established in 1613 in Ghent, Belgium, where it still meets twice a week in the 17th century tower that has been its home for nearly 400 years.

Early Fencing Writing

The earliest known surviving treatise on fencing, stored at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, England, dates from around 1300 AD and is from Germany. Written in medieval Latin and German, it describes a system of using the sword and buckler (small shield) and is illustrated by over 100 ink and watercolour drawings.

Leon Paul - "London Lights"

For the London 2012 Olympics, Leon Paul created the "London Lights" - over 640 meters of LED color changing light rope with 38,400 individual LED’s and more than 5km of cable were used to make this spectacular visual effect.

George Peppard

George Peppard was a fencing instructor before becoming famous in ‘The A-Team’ TV series.

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill won the Public Schools Fencing championship in foil in his youth - his name can still be seen on the trophy presented in the current championship.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was also a skilled stage fencer and taught his actors to make things look as real as possible.

Karl Marx

Karl Marx (1818-1883) was a German social, political, and econimic theorist. He studied at the University of Bonn where he first learned fencing. 

Bruce Dickinson

Bruce Dickinson, multi-millionaire and lead singer of the rock group "Iron Maiden" founded the Duellist International fencing equipment supplier.  As competitive International fencer he travelled round the globe, with his guitar on one shoulder and his fencing bag over the other.

Fast moving hits

The tip of the fencing weapon is the second fastest moving object in sport after the marksman's bullet.

Fencing and Ballet

Many of the ballet positions are derived from fencing.

Bob Anderson - Fencing Master

Bob Anderson (1922-2012) was the fencing master who coached and acted as a stunt double in almost every modern film which contains any fencing. He also coached the British fencing team for 30 years. From Star Wars to James Bond; from Highlander to The Mask of Zorro; and from The Princes Bride to The Master of Ballantrae - he helped make them all. Reputedly during some rehearsals, he once slashed Errol Flynn in the thigh by accident, drawing blood, while the star was being distracted by a passing beauty.

Fencing in the Olympics

When the Olympics Games were revived from antiquity in 1896, fencing was on the program. It is one of just four sports to have been part of every Summer Games since then. Men's foil and sabre were part of the first Games; epee was added in 1900. Women competed in Olympic fencing for the first time in 1924.

Leon Paul's Fencers

Leon Paul Fencing Equipment has always been a company run by competitive fencers. Members of the family have competed in 20 Olympic Games and 30 World Championships and have won 25 national titles.

Scotland's Last Duel

Few other institutions can match the history of Glasgow University Union. Founded in 1885, the Union was the scene of Scotland’s last ever duel in 1899; swords were drawn and blood was spilled over the election battle for the University Rectorship.

Veterans 4 Nations - Result

Scotland came 2nd overall in the recent Veterans 4 Nations International in Dublin.  Some great results for our teams, especially the Women's Sabre team who won all their matches.

Also well done to Fiona Jamieson, stepping in at the last minute to complete our Women's Foil team - and holding her own in her first competition.

Glasgow Open 2013 - Results

As in previous years, when not running the cafe (or DT) some of our members participated in the actual competition of the Glasgow Open 2013.

In the Ladies' Foil there were good results for

In the Men's Epee and Foil, Simon and Kris (a couple of our recent beginners) managed great results for their first Open competition - and it being the largest competition in Scotland.

Fencing Coaching Course

A one day coaching course in Glasgow led by Mark McKenzie (Maitre d'Escrime).

Learn the basics of coaching and improve your tactical knowledge on the first of a series of courses leading to formal B.A.F. qualifications.

Alternatively, come as a fencer and receive a whole day of coaching from the trainees.

The course will primarily focus on foil, levels 1 & 2. If you want to do other weapons/levels, you can.

Scottish Veterans Team Selections

The team Scotland selection for this year's Veterans Home International match has been announced by Scottish Fencing.

Included in the teams are Mark McKenzie (Epee), Keith Davidson (Sabre) and Fiona Jamieson (Foil) from GWEFC.

The Veterans 5 Nations is being held this year in Dublin on May 4th & 5th and represents a great opportunity for another strong Scottish performance.

Dundee Duel - Results

The Dundee Duel is an unique annual 1-hit Epee competition, where competitors compete both individually and as part of a team.  Several of our fencers attended this year's event:

Monday Night Training

Several members of the club are discussing the idea of an additional "Bring Your Own Kit" training night - probably to be held on a Monday evening in the West End.  If you are interested please speak to Paul, Kris or Simon.

Full details not finalised but we expect that there will be one or more coaches at these training evenings.

There will probably be at least 1 electic box but no other kit to borrow - so Bring Your Own.

Foil 48er Results

An almost full turn out for this 48er held at Wallace Fencing Academy - there were 48 entrants but 2 cried off sick on the day but with 1 reserve on the day we had 47. Maybe next time we will get the full 48.

With so many people we just had time for 4 rounds of individual competition. Good results from our club members - for several of whom this was their first competition.
